The Gift of Existence: Issue of Consent

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

Question:
We did not consent to participate in the system created by Allah, where we must abide by His rules, resist worldly temptations, and face the risk of everlasting Hell if we fail the test.

Some people wonder: what if we were not created at all? Wouldn’t that spare us from the trials of life and the possibility of eternal punishment? They argue that had they known the rigors of this test, they might have preferred nonexistence over the challenges of existence.

To address this concern, let us consider an analogy. Imagine that our existence in this world is an incredible opportunity. Having consciousness and the ability to experience life is a profound blessing compared to the alternative—nonexistence.

To illustrate this, equate nonexistence to a person born into extreme poverty, surrounded by the opulence and well-being of others and eying them with desire. Now imagine that this impoverished individual suddenly receives an extraordinary gift—a luxurious Ferrari. However, there’s a small condition: the person must drive the car carefully and responsibly during a brief test drive. If successful, they can enjoy this magnificent gift for the rest of their life. Alternatively, they could lose self-control, drive recklessly, cause a terrible accident, and live the rest of their life in even greater misfortune, possibly losing their limbs.

Any reasonable person would see this as an opportunity and would gratefully accept the conditions of the test, knowing the immense reward that lies ahead. Only someone truly shortsighted would squander such a chance.

For those who believe in the Creator of the universe, it’s understood that He is infinitely more knowledgeable and wise than any human being. He has complete awareness of the bigger picture. Consider how parents make decisions for their children—such as sending them to school—when the children are too young to understand what’s best for them. No rational person blames their parents for making such decisions, as they are based on love and a desire for the child’s long-term benefit.

Similarly, Allah, the Creator, is infinitely wiser than us or even our parents. His decision to create us and place us in this test reflects His knowledge of what is ultimately in our best interest. He has given us a unique opportunity to attain eternal bliss—a chance that outweighs the risks of failure. Only the most unfortunate individual would squander this opportunity and end up in a state worse than if they had never existed.

If we understand this blessing of existence that Allah has given us and be thankful for it and believe in him there are great rewards waiting for us.

4:147 مَّا يَفْعَلُ اللَّهُ بِعَذَابِكُمْ إِن شَكَرْتُمْ وَآمَنتُمْ ۚ وَكَانَ اللَّهُ شَاكِرًا عَلِيمًا

Why should Allah chastise you if you are grateful and believe? And Allah is appreciative (of good deeds), (all) Knowing.
