Does the Quran advocates for a lunar, solar, or hybrid calendar? By examining specific ayahs, we can see a sophisticated system that balances religious duties with the practicalities of life on a global scale.
1. The Twelve-Month Foundation
Ayat 9:36 establishes that the count of months has been twelve since the dawn of creation.

From a scientific perspective, the Sun, Earth, and Moon have co-existed for approximately 4.5 billion years. This twelve-month cycle is a fundamental rhythm built into the mechanics of our solar system.
10:5 هُوَ الَّذِي جَعَلَ الشَّمْسَ ضِيَاءً وَالْقَمَرَ نُورًا وَقَدَّرَهُ مَنَازِلَ لِتَعْلَمُوا عَدَدَ السِّنِينَ وَالْحِسَابَ ۚ مَا خَلَقَ اللَّهُ ذَٰلِكَ إِلَّا بِالْحَقِّ ۚ يُفَصِّلُ الْآيَاتِ لِقَوْمٍ يَعْلَمُونَ
It is He, who made the sun a radiance and the moon a light, and determined stages for it (moon); that you may know the count of years and the calculation. Allah did not create this but in truth. He explains His ayahs/signs in detail, for those who understand.
In ayat 10:5 it is stated that Allah made the sun a radiance and determined the stages of moon so that you can learn and maintain calculations of years i.e calendar system. Moon is specifically mentioned with its stages for determining the calculations of years however, there is a mention of Sun as well, so there is a role of sun as well which we will see later in this post.
2:189 يَسْأَلُونَكَ عَنِ الْأَهِلَّةِ ۖ قُلْ هِيَ مَوَاقِيتُ لِلنَّاسِ وَالْحَجِّ ۗ ….
They ask thee about the Moon phases. Say, they are schedules/periods of time for people, and for Hajj.….
The Islamic calendar system used for Islamic events e.g Hajj is based on moon phases. The moon based system ensures that the event of Hajj and month of Ramadan keeps rotating in all seasons and not get fixed in one season. Had it been fixed to solar calendar the Hajj and Ramadhan would be fixed for one season in the Northern Hemisphere and the opposite season in the Southern Hemisphere of the earth.
Why the Lunar Calendar Must Rotate
A pure lunar year is roughly 11 days shorter than a solar year. This means Islamic events like Ramadan and Hajj “rotate” through the seasons. This is not a flaw; it is a divine mercy for global equity.
If Ramadan were fixed to a solar month (e.g., June):
- Northern Hemisphere: Believers would fast during the longest, hottest days of summer every single year.
- Southern Hemisphere: Believers would fast during the shortest, coldest days of winter every single year.
By using a rotating lunar system, Allah ensures that over a 33-year cycle, every believer on Earth experiences the fast in every season, balancing the difficulty and the reward fairly across the globe.
106-1-4 لِإِيلَافِ قُرَيْشٍ إِيلَافِهِمْ رِحْلَةَ الشِّتَاءِ وَالصَّيْفِ فَلْيَعْبُدُوا رَبَّ هَٰذَا الْبَيْتِ الَّذِي أَطْعَمَهُم مِّن جُوعٍ وَآمَنَهُم مِّنْ خَوْف
For the joining/amalgamation of the Quraish, Their joining in journeys in winter and summer,- Let them serve the Lord of this House, The One who feeds them in hunger, and secures them from fear.
The root word (ق ر ش) conveys the meaning of gathering from various places. Sura ‘Quraish’ states that for the joining and amalgamation of Quraish in their journeys in winter and summer months, so that they serve the Lord of this House who feeds them in hunger and protects them from fear.
In Surah Quraish, we see a mention of journeys in “winter and summer.” While traditionally seen as a tribe, the root Q-R-SH (ق ر ش) means to “gather or collect.”
Under this linguistic lens, “Quraish” describes the character trait of those who gather for Hajj. They are the pilgrims who converge from all corners of the world, joined in their journey regardless of the season, to serve the Lord of the House who provides them with security and sustenance.
2:197 الْحَجُّ أَشْهُرٌ مَّعْلُومَاتٌ ۚ فَمَن فَرَضَ فِيهِنَّ الْحَجَّ فَلَا رَفَثَ وَلَا فُسُوقَ وَلَا جِدَالَ فِي الْحَجِّ ۗ وَمَا تَفْعَلُوا مِنْ خَيْرٍ يَعْلَمْهُ اللَّهُ ۗ وَتَزَوَّدُوا فَإِنَّ خَيْرَ الزَّادِ التَّقْوَىٰ ۚ وَاتَّقُونِ يَا أُولِي الْأَلْبَابِ
The months of Hajj/Pilgrimage are known, so whosoever imposes Hajj (on himself) in them so he should not commit obscenity nor commit immoralities and no bickering in the Hajj. And what you do from goodness, Allah knows it. And take provision, so surely the best of the provisions is to take guard and take guard from Me O’ you who posses the core (of Knowledge)
Ayat 2:197 states that the months of Hajj are common knowledge, meaning that people have always been aware of them. Prophet Ibrahim (a.s) announced Hajj for all of mankind, as mentioned in ayat 22:27.
Therefore, if someone conducts his research and claims that the months in which Muslims currently perform Hajj do not align with the Quran, and Hajj should be observed in a different month, their conclusion cannot be accepted. This is because the established months of Hajj have always been known to people, and the new research which is not conforming to common knowledge of the months of Hajj, cannot be accepted.
17:12 وَجَعَلْنَا اللَّيْلَ وَالنَّهَارَ آيَتَيْنِ ۖ فَمَحَوْنَا آيَةَ اللَّيْلِ وَجَعَلْنَا آيَةَ النَّهَارِ مُبْصِرَةً لِّتَبْتَغُوا فَضْلًا مِّن رَّبِّكُمْ وَلِتَعْلَمُوا عَدَدَ السِّنِينَ وَالْحِسَابَ ۚ وَكُلَّ شَيْءٍ فَصَّلْنَاهُ تَفْصِيلًا
We have made the night and the day as two (of Our) signs. Thus We obscured the sign of the night, and made the sign of the day manifest ; so that ye may seek bounty from your Lord, and that ye may know the number and count of the years and We explained everything in detail.
The above ayat mention days and night signs and they are meant for keeping calculations of the years. If we compare this ayat 17:12 with 10:5 we notice both are asking to keep calculation of years and therefore calendar system. 17:12 mentions that you seek bounty of your Lord. Means that the calendar system based on sun is used for business purposes and the calendar system based on moon for religious purposes. So both lunar and solar calendars can be maintained separately. The solar cycle (seasons) is essential for agriculture and trade—the “seeking of bounty.” However, the lunar cycle is the primary driver for the religious calendar.
Now the question arises, can we combine the two calendar systems in one?
9:37 إِنَّمَا النَّسِيءُ زِيَادَةٌ فِي الْكُفْرِ ۖ يُضَلُّ بِهِ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا يُحِلُّونَهُ عَامًا وَيُحَرِّمُونَهُ عَامًا لِّيُوَاطِئُوا عِدَّةَ مَا حَرَّمَ اللَّهُ فَيُحِلُّوا مَا حَرَّمَ اللَّهُ ۚ زُيِّنَ لَهُمْ سُوءُ أَعْمَالِهِمْ ۗ وَاللَّهُ لَا يَهْدِي الْقَوْمَ الْكَافِرِينَ
Surely the postponement (of the sacred / holy month) is an increase in the rejection, those who reject are led astray with it. They make it (the sacred month) un-sacred / lawful in a year and make it sacred / forbidden in a (another) year. So that they adjust the numbers (of the sacred / holy months) to what Allah has made sacred / forbidden. So they make it un-sacred / lawful to what Allah has made sacred / forbidden. Their bad works are adornment for them. And Allah does not guide the people who are rejecters.
If a luni-solar calendar system is adopted, there will have to be some intercalation in that one, which is rejected by Allah. It seems that a Lunisolar calendar will mess up the very intention of the lunar calendar that the Hajj and Ramadan should not be fixed to a season in different parts of the world.
Some people argue that since names of Arabic months such as ‘Ramadhan’ means intense heat, would indicate that this month was intended to be always coming in the summer. However, we know that Quran is guidance for all the world, just not only the northern hemisphere of the world. If Ramadhan can only come in summer month, it would mean it would be a month in solar calendar instead of lunar calendar, and there will be winter season in the southern hemisphere during that month.
Notes:
The actual phase of the moon is the same all over the world at any given time. If it is full moon in Canada it is also a full moon in Australia.
The Arabs uses a lunar calendar, the word سِّنِينَ/Sineen’ should mean lunar years if no additional information is provided that something else is meant. For example in English when you say 10 years, it would mean 10 solar years, unless more information is provided if lunar years were meant.

5. The Prohibition of Intercalation (9:37)
Some systems (Luni-solar) try to “fix” the lunar calendar to the seasons by adding an extra month every few years (intercalation). The Quran explicitly forbids this in Ayat 9:37, calling the practice of Nasi’ (postponement) an “increase in disbelief.”
Adjusting the count to match the seasons interferes with the divine 12-month rhythm and destroys the seasonal rotation that makes the calendar fair for all people living in 2 hemispheres of earth.
